Situated between Northwest Washington and Silver Spring, Takoma Park has long held the reputation as Washington’s most liberal area. Over the decades it has fostered the well known nicknames of “The People’s Republic of Takoma Park” and “Berkeley East.” To no surprise, Takoma’s 18,000 residents are among Washington’s most diverse and socially conscious. In fact, the nuclear free zone was Maryland’s first region to legalize gay marriage and has won acclaim for its environmentally friendly policies.
Neighborhoods in Takoma Park can be noted for their pleasant atmosphere and tree lined streets. Due to Takoma Park’s location just east of Rock Creek, the area’s parks and recreation have long stood as one of its strong points. The average home sales price in 2010 was $305,000 with small condos beginning around $150,000 and larger homes reaching upwards of $1 million.
Takoma Park’s commercial district remains relatively small, but features several good restaurants and boutiques. In general, residents take to Northwest DC and Silver Spring when in search of food. Easing access to other parts of the DC Region, Takoma Park boasts its own Metro stop along the red line.
