Top Ten Favorite Tips for
Decorating Small Spaces
Many people find decorating a small space challenging. Don’t be afraid, just jump right in. The end result will be an intimate, cozy space that will be a joy to live in.
Here is the updated version of the top ten favorite decorating tips from our buyDCcondos.com website.
1. Edit. Edit. Edit. De-Clutter the Space –
In a small space, it is important to keep everything as simple as possible. Clutter is not an option. Get rid of knick-knacks and too much furniture. Be creative with storage. Use baskets, tall narrow bookshelves and storage ottomans to hide all those essential items. Use vertical space in your condo. Look up and use all that space up your walls. Make a home office in a closet, under a stairwell or at the foot of your bed. Be creative.
2. Use Mirrors –
This advice may be as old as the hills, but most decorators recommend mirrors in small spaces to help reflect light. Light gives the illusion that the room is larger. In narrow rooms, placing mirrors at each end allows light to reflect light throughout the whole room.
3. Color –
It seems that there is a great deal of conflicting advice when it comes to what color is best for small spaces. Many decorators recommend using lighter colors in order to expand a space. Then there are many professionals that strongly believe that dark colors with just a few pieces of big furniture and appropriate lighting can make a room feel larger and more luxurious. Some designers recommend dark charcoal gray or Ralph Lauren’s Black Truffles. Others recommend using light receding colors on walls. (These colors are found on the left side of a paint color wheel. Cool receding colors are in the blue and green family.)
4. Buy Furniture with Legs that are Higher Off of the Floor -
InfoBarrel says that “Your eye will look under these pieces of furniture and add visual space.” Furniture that is close to the ground is said to make a room seem more crowded. Armless sofas and chairs, on the other hand, make a room seem open and airy.
5. Reflective Surfaces –
Use tables made out of metal, chrome, glass or mirrors to help reflect light and make the room seem larger.
6. Use Light Creatively –
It is important to have at least three points of light at eye level in each room. Then make sure you turn them on. House Beautiful says that, “By giving your eyes multiple focus points, lamps help expand a room visually, creating the illusion of more depth and space.
7. Get Rid of Doors -
Whenever possible get rid of doors and hang curtains instead. It helps with the flow and eliminates the problem of open doors taking up critical space.
8. Floor to Ceiling Window Treatments –
Hang curtains from the ceiling to the floor. This draws the eye up toward the ceiling and makes the room larger than it really is.
9. Use Light Colored Carpet on the Floor –
If you have dark wood floors or dark wall-to-wall carpeting, place a light-colored area rug in the center of the room. Light floors make a room seem more expansive.
10. Wash the Windows –
This tip is so simple but often overlooked. Eyes will stop at a dirty window, but the room will go on forever when the view is crystal clear. So garb some ammonia water and a squeegee and make your windows sparkle.
